Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral, which usually occurs in fractures and cavities of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Its colour range from light pink to bright red; and is found in limited places around the world. Those in beautiful pinks are usually produced into gemstones. As it is rarely found in a well-formed crystal, such pieces can be extremely valuable. In terms of physical look, it is quite easy to identify and is seldom confused with other crystals. As it has a variable chemical composition, its specific gravity, hardness and colour would differ, depending on the element (e.g. iron, magnesium and/or calcium) which substitutes manganese. This results in the stone becoming greyish, yellowish, or brownish. However, point to note is that most people associates rhodochrosite with the colour pink. Though the looks aren't confusing, the name itself is often confused with another called "rhodonite". Both are pink and rich in manganese but the texture is quite different; and would not be confusing to differentiate.
